BCCI President Rajeev Shukla confirmed that the board has decided to retire jersey No.7 to honour the legendary Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“He is a legendary player. His contribution to Indian cricket as well as world cricket is immense. To honour his contribution, the decision to retire number seven has been taken by the BCCI,” said Shukla to PTI.
Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. The last time he donned the Indian jersey was in the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
Earlier, the board had also retired Sachin Tendulkar’s iconic jersey No.10.
Dhoni is the first and only captain to win all three major ICC trophies, as under his captaincy, India won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2011 Cricket World Cup, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, the most by any captain. He also led India to victory in the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cup.
